MOTV: Research Methods and Data Resources for Social Sciences - Case of Finland

tuomas.alatera@uta.fi

MOTV (abbreviation of the Finnish name) WWW resource offers social scientists guidance in research methods and data resources.

MOTV Research Methods Web Resource is a part of Finnish Virtual University, a nation-wide project that provides a virtual campus for teachers and students. FVU is a joint effort of a number of Finnish universities, and offers nationally courses in various academic fields.

The Finnish Social Science Data Archive (FSD) is in charge of maintaining and developing the MOTV project. Connection with FVU gives FSD a completely new and unique opportunity to make its data materials available to students and teachers alike. All the MOTV exercises are based on extensive research materials which are tailored to support learning purposes and are freely downloadable from the FSD website.

The core idea of MOTV is to teach the basics of quantitative methods by means of genuine research data. The understanding of Finnish terminology and concepts is crucial for the Finnish students of social sciences. At the present, MOTV is published only in Finnish, but the presentation will give extensive information on it in English.

Structure: MOTV is an open learning environment, consisting of a method section in hypertext format, an integrated SPSS learning environment, and an abundance of learning material applicable to various teaching equipment and spaces.

Aims: When fully operational, MOTV can supplement (or in minor scale replace if so desired) most of the basic social science quantitative research methods courses offered in Finnish universities. Departments will be able to include virtual exams to the curricula and teachers can integrate parts of their own courses to MOTV.
