W. Smith In the immediate aftermath of the terrorist attacks on September 11th, NORC launched the National Tragedy Study (NTS). About half of the content of the NTS was based on the Kennedy Assassination Study which was conducted shortly after the President's shooting in 1963. This paper 1) recounts the steps that NORC took over the next five months to find and recover the case-level Kennedy Assassination Study data, 2) addresses practical issues about preserving old survey data, and 3) considers the general lessons that this case has for survey research and data archives.
