Altman Proposal 1 (Paper) The number and quality of "Open Source" software packages is growing rapidly. This has great potential for data services -- but the variety of licenses, cost implications, and options for data services are perplexing. This first half of this session give an introduction to the open source software model and an overview of the types of open source licenses, and the costs and benefits of using open source software in a library environment. The second half of the session will focus on particular tools emerging for library and data services, such as GreenStone, RIB, VDC, and open source libraries for MARC and Z39.50. Proposal 2 (Demo) Virtual Data Center Software Demo The Virtual Data Center is an operational, open-source, digital library to enable the sharing of quantitative research data, and the development of distributed virtual collections of data and documentation. We will demo the current version of the software including new tabulation and web-based-administration facilities. Micah Altman, Ph.D.
